Enshrouded Farming and Fishing: Seedbed, Seeds and Bait

Quick answer: there is no farming skill in Enshrouded. Farming is a survivor chain. You rescue the Farmer, Emily Fray, during the quest Growing Stronger Together at Ancient Vault - Farmer, then build a Seedbed at your base and turn plants you find in the world into seedlings. Fishing is separate and available much earlier: accept the Hunter's Unknown Waters quest, craft a rod, and cast at any water, including a pond you dig yourself.

  • The Seedbed costs 10 Wood Logs, 2 Metal Scraps and 10 Farm Soil, and it is crafted at the Farmer.
  • Seedling recipes consume the plant they grow from, so the first copy of a crop has to come from the wild.
  • Animals are tamed with species bait and petting, then need a Sheltered Bed and Animal Food at your base.
  • Fishing is the fastest food loop early on, and bait no longer decides which fish you catch, only what junk you pull up.

Step one: rescue Emily Fray

The Farmer is not a vendor you meet in a town. She is held in Ancient Vault - Farmer, and the main quest that frees her is Growing Stronger Together. Until that quest is done, the Seedbed recipe does not exist for you, no matter how much wood and soil you are carrying.

Once she is at your base, she brings more than the Seedbed. Her station list also includes the Cooking Station, the Oven and the Beehive, and her own quests send you after the equipment that unlocks them: the Kettle, the Almanac of Plants and Seedlings and the Beehive Smoker. She also asks you to tame animals, which is the game's way of introducing husbandry.

Step two: build the Seedbed and start seedlings

Place the Seedbed inside your base like any other crafting station. The recipe is instant once you have the materials:

Material Amount Where it comes from
Wood Logs 10 Any tree, or the Carpenter's sawing stations
Metal Scraps 2 Scavenged metal, early enemy drops
Farm Soil 10 Dug from farm plots and dirt patches in the world

The Seedbed's job is to produce seedlings, not crops directly. Each seedling recipe takes the plant itself plus a second ingredient, and the craft takes 3:00 per batch. A beet, for example, becomes five Beet Seedlings from one Forest Beet and one Farm Soil; aloe turns into ten Aloe Seedlings from one Aloe, one Nitrate and one Sand. Higher-tier plants ask for Fertilised Farm Soil, which is the part of the loop that makes a compost routine worth setting up.

Because the plant is an ingredient, your first harvest of any crop has to be found in the world. The practical route is to pick every glowing plant you pass in Springlands and Revelwood, bank one of each, and only then decide what to mass-produce. There is no official list of per-crop growth times, so treat any precise timer you see elsewhere as community measurement rather than patch notes.

Soil is the bottleneck, not seeds

Ten Farm Soil per Seedbed and one per seedling adds up faster than most players expect. Dig soil while you are already out gathering and keep a stack at base instead of making a special trip.

Step three: animals, if you want materials rather than scenery

Animal Husbandry arrived in the Souls of the Frozen Frontier update and still works the same way in 1.0. You need species-specific Animal Bait, then repeated petting while the animal is distracted, and once it is docile you can pick it up and carry it home.

At base, an animal needs two things to stay healthy: a Sheltered Bed and the correct Animal Food. Tame wildlife then produces crafting materials, and if you have spare Sheltered Beds there is a chance of breeding. Cats and dogs are different: they produce nothing and do not breed, but petting them grants Paw's Touch, which adds 25 health. The cap is 128 animals per world, which matters on a shared server.

Fishing: rods, bait and the reeling minigame

Fishing was added in the Wake of Water update. The loop is short: equip a rod and bait, hold the cast button at any body of water, wait for a hook, then reel by pushing the rod away from the fish until its red stamina bar empties before your green one does.

Bait is not a fish selector. The wiki is explicit that the fishing spot and its biome tier determine the species, while bait changes the non-fish items you pull from the trash pool. Simple Fishing Bait is made with manual crafting; higher tiers come from the Fisher, who also sells fishing gear. There are five rods, and the good ones are quest rewards before they are craftable:

Rod Strength / Endurance How you get it
Simple Fishing Rod +1 / +1.0 Manual crafting after accepting Unknown Waters
Cursed Fishing Rod +2 / +1.8 Reward from A Cursed Catch
Improved Fishing Rod +2 / +2.0 Recipe unlocked by crafting Iron Bars
Lucky Fishing Rod +3 / +2.5 Lucky Catch, then craftable at the Fisher
Excellent Fishing Rod +3 / +2.5 Nice Day For Fishing, then craftable at the Fisher

Early on, fish are simply the best food you can get without a farm. Later, the Seedbed and the Cooking Station take over, and fishing becomes a source of treasure and junk as much as dinner.

FAQ

Do I need the Farmer to farm at all? Yes. The Seedbed recipe is unlocked by rescuing Emily Fray. Without her you can gather plants, but you cannot turn them into a renewable crop.

Can I fish before I have a base? Yes. The Simple Fishing Rod is unlocked by accepting the Hunter's Unknown Waters quest, and any body of water works, including ponds you dig inside a base.

Does bait decide which fish I catch? No. The spot and its biome tier decide the species. Bait changes what non-fish items you pull from the trash pool.

Is there a watering can or crop disease system? The official wiki and the 1.0 changelog do not describe either. If a guide shows a watering mechanic, it is not documented by Keen Games.
